If you are in college/university now, CONGRATS! For you are now
granted your parents’ wish and already one step ahead to achieve your
dreams. Congrats again and with that I am very sure, some of you who are
reading this have already applied for loans/scholarship that has been
provided by the government or any organizations.
Consider yourself lucky, because not everyone is eligible for any
loans given. Okay, so here are some financial tips for you guys, but I
will tune in a little bit of this article to suit the needs of Malaysian
students. But hey, you do not have to blindly follow these tip, if you
have your own way managing your money, please do not hesitate to follow
your own rules. After all it is your money. HAVE FUN READING!
- Buy or rent used textbooks.
Text books are obviously so EXPENSIVE! (and thick of course) so what
can you do is, try to buy second-hand books from your senior in a
cheaper price. Most of them are still in a good condition though some
might be just a photo stated book. So rather than buying a new expensive
ones, you can always cut you budget by buying a second-hand books.
- Never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
This is very crucial! For a student, you EAT A LOT! Some says because
you are studying so you tend to feel hungry often. But here is a thing,
going for a grocery shopping while you are hungry will only leads to a
very huge cash flows. So AVOID THAT!
- Smoking and binge drinking are terrible for you and EXPENSIVE!
If you are about to join in the ‘smoking-cool-dudes’ group, make sure
you have some notes inside your pockets right now. And if you don’t, do
not try to even think about it. A small box of cigarettes will cost you
about RM 5-15 ringgit each (maybe more). That’s a huge amount for a
student! Why not save it for your meal or maybe a vacation at the end of
the semester.
- Do you really need a car?
Ask yourself, do you really need a car? If you can still go to class
without having a car, do not buy one! You can save a lot here. From
petrol, to toll fees and yes, parking fees. So instead of having a car,
just use public transportation that has been provided, and the best part
is, IT IS FOR FREE!
- Live with others so you can split rent and utilities.
So in Malaysian context, it is compulsory to stay in the hostel on
the first semester and you can decide whether to stay or to rent outside
college after that. So what can you do is, stay with your friends, so
that you guy can split the rent fees equally.
- Utilize your student ID.
This is the best part of being a student. Never ever just keep your
student ID inside your wallet. Use it! You will be getting awesome
discounts if you use your student ID at the cinemas, bookstores,
restaurants and even the arcade!
- Make your own coffee.
Coffee shops are convenient, but bear in mind they charge hefty
prices that will cost you triple the price when you make your own coffee
at home.
- Don’t buy music.
There are a lot of free music apps nowadays. Ever heard of Spotify
before? Go download it now, and you will be able to listen to tons of
playlists for free!
- Never take out a loan for anything that’s unrelated to your education.
If you have already taken any loans for your studies, never ever take
any loans such as credit card, car loans especially while studying. You
do not want to graduate with debts around you!
- Go to class!
You’re paying for it and skipping is like throwing money out the window! Not only that, you have study loans to pay. Remember?
I really hope you find this article useful for you, especially
freshmen. Always remember the reason you enter college and never let
your parents off your mind. One more thing, never go broke, trying to look rich
